To revive and re-imagine the practice of dreaming in ancestral and urban communities, NOMASMETAFORAS holds collective dreaming workshops with plants alongside traditional medicine healers. Dreaming in originary communities is understood as a space of anticipation, conversation, and of transformation with non-human beings. It is a space that extends beyond the dichotomies imposed by Western modernity, where nature is seen as something to merely ‘consume’ and to extract from. In the dream space, one can communicate with beings that one usually assumes she/he is separate from, the frontiers between the human/non-human become porous. Learning to dream is key to fighting a rationalist-led discourse that is the continuation of a colonial, modern take on reality. Indeed, the imposition of the enlightenment discourse on epistemologies of the south and of Abya Yala resulted in the cancelation of other ways of relating to reality that would enable us to move beyond the boundaries of selfhood and human exceptionalism. To share the space of dreaming, usually understood as an intimate and vulnerable experience is to enter into conversation with beings that surround us in a way that resists a rational understanding of the world. Dreaming collectively is resistance.
